03 · Process
Step by step
Decide whether you need an appointment
Since August 2025 every US consulate serves passport, DPI and consular card walk-ins, except Nashville and Atlanta. If you prefer an appointment, book it by phone only, on your consulate's number.
Update your details with RENAP first
A name change must be made with RENAP first.
Attend with originals
Consulates also hold one “consular Saturday” a month.
Receive the passport
At consulates with a printing centre, the same day.
04 · Booking
Appointments
The ConsulApp Guate app was switched off in July 2025. Appointments are free and by phone only, on each consulate's number published by MINEX; Nashville and Atlanta require one, as do mobile consulates. IGM and MINEX use no intermediaries.
ConsulMap is an independent directory. It neither manages nor sells appointments: this button opens an external official site.
05 · Your case
Who it applies to
- Guatemalan adults, first passport or renewal.
- Minors: 5-year passport only, with a parent or an authorised third party.
- Anyone who only needs more validity: an 18-month sticker (free) or a 3-year sticker, once per passport issued since 2013.
06 · Avoid a repeat visit
Common mistakes
- Bringing a DPI copy or application receipt: not accepted.
- Presenting a damaged passport or one with torn pages as valid.
- Requesting the 10-year passport for a minor.
- Paying middlemen: appointments are free.
- Looking for an appointment in the old ConsulApp: it no longer works.
07 · About this guide
Scope of this guide
Guatemalan passports are issued by the migration institute (IGM) and processed abroad by the consulates of the Foreign Ministry (MINEX). Consulates with a Passport Printing Centre print it on the spot: Phoenix, opened in August 2026, was the twentieth in the US.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a Guatemalan passport in the US?
USD 65 for 5 years and USD 100 for 10 years when applied for abroad. Minors can only get the 5-year passport.
Do I need an appointment at the Guatemalan consulate?
At almost every US consulate, no: since August 2025 they take walk-ins, except Nashville and Atlanta. Appointments, if you want one, are booked by phone.
Can I extend validity without a new passport?
Yes, with a sticker: 18 months free if at least 2 blank sheets remain, or 3 years if 4 remain. Once per passport, for passports issued since 2013.
