Documents the authority lists and what to check on each.

Birth certificate or other proof of nationalityOnly if SRE cannot confirm your nationality in its databases. A nationality certificate or declaration, a naturalisation letter or a consular ID also work.
Original official photo IDINE voter card, valid consular ID, military card, professional licence, US driver's licence, green card or a US government ID, among others. Details must match the birth certificate exactly. Mexican IDs need not be current.
Previous passport, if renewingIf lost or stolen, a report filed at the consulate or with the police.
Marriage certificate, for your spouse's surnameOriginal; if foreign, apostilled or legalised.

03 · Process

Step by step

  1. Book on MiConsulado

    At citas.sre.gob.mx, 24/7, or by phone and WhatsApp at 1 (424) 309-0009. Appointments are free, personal and non-transferable. You pick the office inside the system.

  2. Arrive 15 minutes early with originals

    Do not bring photos: they are taken at the consulate, facing forward, white background, no glasses.

  3. Minors: both parents or form OP-7

    A parent who cannot attend signs consent at any consulate or passport office, or before a Mexican notary. Divorce does not remove parental authority: without a ruling that removes it, both sign.

  4. Pay and wait

    The procedure takes about an hour and US consulates hand the passport over the same day, in about two hours.

Appointments

MiConsulado replaced MEXITEL: citas.sre.gob.mx or 1 (424) 309-0009 (Monday to Friday 8:00–21:00 and weekends 9:00–18:00, Mexico City time). Without an appointment, each consulate serves as many cases as its average daily no-shows, and emergencies are served the same day.

05 · Your case

Who it applies to

  • Mexicans by birth or naturalisation, adults or minors.
  • Renewal at any time: expiry, full pages, change of appearance, theft, loss, damage or data correction.
  • Minors under 18: both holders of parental authority attend or give consent on form OP-7.
  • People over 60 and people with a disability: 50% discount. Temporary agricultural workers under government agreements: 50% on passports of up to 6 years.

Common mistakes

  • Bringing an ID whose name does not match the birth certificate exactly.
  • Attending with one parent without the other's OP-7, even if divorced.
  • Renewing a passport marked “NO CANJEABLE” as a normal renewal: it needs first-time documents.
  • Paying fixers for the appointment: it is free.
  • Not checking the details before printing.

Scope of this guide

This guide covers the ordinary Mexican passport, first-time or renewal, at any Mexican consulate in the United States. Requirements are set by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) for the whole network, so they are the same at every consulate; what changes from one to another is payment and scheduling.

How much is a Mexican passport in the US in 2026?

USD 44 (1 year), USD 101 (3 years), USD 137 (6 years) and USD 209 (10 years). People over 60 and people with a disability pay half. An emergency passport carries a 30% surcharge, except for theft or loss, an immigration appointment, medical care, education or consular protection.

Do I get it the same day?

Yes: US consulates hand the passport over on the day of the appointment, in about two hours.

Which validity can I choose?

Under 3: 1 or 3 years. Ages 3 to 17: 3 or 6 years. Adults: 3, 6 or 10 years.

Do I need a CURP?

It is not among the official requirements in the consular protocol.
