Original proof of nationalityBirth certificate, nationality certificate or declaration, naturalisation letter or a valid Mexican passport. The consulate checks its databases first.

03 · Process

Step by step

  1. Book on MiConsulado

    citas.sre.gob.mx or 1 (424) 309-0009. The matrícula requires an appointment.

  2. Go to the consulate for your address

    The matrícula is issued by the consulate for your district.

  3. Check the data printout

    Before printing, the system produces a confirmation sheet: check it. Once printed, correcting an error means a new procedure and a new fee.

  4. Collect it the same day

    In Chicago it is handed over on the day of the appointment, in about two hours.

Who it applies to

  • Mexicans by birth or naturalisation living in the consulate's district.
  • Minors and people with a disability, with authorisation from whoever holds parental authority or guardianship.
  • Renewal after 5 years, after loss or theft, or after moving.

Common mistakes

  • Bringing an incomplete proof of address, or one in someone else's name without proving the relationship.
  • Signing without checking the data sheet: a printed error means paying for a new matrícula.
  • Assuming the matrícula proves legal status in the US: it does not.

Scope of this guide

The high-security consular ID (Matrícula Consular de Alta Seguridad, MCAS) is a public document issued by Mexican consulates in the United States and Canada. SRE defines it as a register of Mexicans living in each consular district. Every Mexican is entitled to it at the consulate for their address, regardless of immigration status.

How much is the matrícula consular in 2026?

USD 41. The 50% discount for people over 60 applies only to passports, not to the matrícula.

What is the matrícula consular used for?

According to SRE, many public and private institutions accept it as ID, and it proves Mexican nationality to Mexican authorities, for example for a passport. It does not prove or replace legal immigration status.

Do I need legal status to get one?

No. It is issued to any Mexican regardless of immigration status.
