Book on the Portal de Citas
portalcitas.rree.gob.sv, service “Trámites de pasaporte”.
Update your DUI first if needed
A name or marital status change must appear on the DUI first.
Attend with originals
Photo, fingerprints and digital signature are taken at the consulate.
Pay and collect
simple.sv states an average of two business hours and a legal maximum of 20 business days.

Who it applies to
- Salvadorans by birth or naturalisation, adults or minors.

Common mistakes
- Bringing a birth certificate over a year old: it is refused.
- Applying with a name or marital status the DUI does not yet show.
- Attending with one parent without the other's power of attorney or notarial authorisation.
- Using the in-country migration fee: in the US it is USD 60.

Scope of this guide
This guide covers the ordinary passport for Salvadorans abroad processed at El Salvador's consulates in the United States. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs handles it through its consulates. Inside El Salvador it is issued by the migration authority, at a different fee that does not apply in the US.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a Salvadoran passport in the US?
USD 60 for a first passport or renewal, adults and minors. Replacement after loss or theft adds a USD 20 sworn statement (USD 80), and a second consecutive loss adds a fine of three times the passport fee (USD 260 in total).
How long is it valid?
Six years from issue.
Do I need a DUI to get a passport?
Yes, as a rule. Without a DUI, only an alternative approved in advance by the head of the consulate is accepted.
