03 · Process

Step by step

  1. Create a new portal account

    mportal.passportindia.gov.in/mission. Jurisdiction is chosen when creating the account; if you applied at another office before, create a new account.

  2. Complete the form and upload photo, signature and documents

    Details must match your current passport: a mismatch means rejection with no refund of VFS fees.

  3. Submit through VFS Global

    In person with an appointment or by mail. In Houston and San Francisco payment is by cashier's check or money order to “VFS Services (USA) Inc”.

  4. Reply in time if something is missing

    You have 21 business days to supply what VFS requests; otherwise it is rejected.

  5. Receive the passport

    VFS sends the new one and the cancelled old one. Washington states 3 to 4 weeks; Houston 6 to 8.

Appointments

The application is completed on the Global Passport Seva portal and submitted to VFS Global, in person or by mail. Neither the consulate nor VFS charges anything extra: beware of agents.

05 · Your case

Who it applies to

  • Indian citizens with legal status in the US (visa, EAD, green card, I-797).
  • Reissue from one year before expiry up to three years after, without fresh police verification.
  • Minors: notarised parental consent (Annexure D or C); 36-page booklet only.
  • Children born in the US: first register the birth at the consulate, then apply for a fresh passport.

06 · Avoid a repeat visit

Common mistakes

  • Using an old portal account with a different jurisdiction.
  • Typing your full name in “Given Name”: it forces a new application.
  • Uploading a photo that is not ICAO-compliant.
  • Booking flights before the passport is decided.
  • Keeping the Indian passport after US naturalisation: India does not allow dual citizenship and it must be surrendered.

Indian passport renewals and reissues in the US are applied for on the Global Passport Seva portal and submitted through VFS Global, the Embassy and consulates' outsourcing provider. The office that decides depends on the state you live in. This guide covers adults and minors; surrendering the passport after US naturalisation is a different service (surrender certificate).
