03 · Process

Step by step

  1. Go to the consulate

    DPI walk-ins are served at every US consulate except Nashville and Atlanta.

  2. Record your details

    Fingerprints, photo and signature on the spot.

  3. Wait for delivery

    RENAP's general rule is 30 business days, plus shipping. In September 2026 MINEX and RENAP agreed to print DPIs in Lake Worth Beach and Los Angeles, with no start date published.

  4. Collect

    The holder at the consulate, or a third party with a notarised authorisation or power of attorney.

05 · Your case

Who it applies to

  • First issue: you can apply from age 17 and receive it at 18.
  • Renewal on expiry (valid for ten years).
  • Replacement after theft, loss or damage, or a change of details.
  • People over 60: first issue and replacement are free.

Common mistakes

  • Bringing a birth certificate older than six months.
  • Using the DPI application receipt to apply for a passport: not accepted.
  • Forgetting that the DPI lapses early if your civil status or name changes.

The Documento Personal de Identificación (DPI) is issued by the national registry (RENAP), present at all 26 Guatemalan consulates in the United States. It is also the base document for a passport.
