Step by step
Check that your consulate renews it
gob.ec lists Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, New Jersey and Queens; Washington and Connecticut also offer it on their pages.
Book
At citas.cancilleria.gob.ec, service “Renovación de cédula”. One procedure per appointment.
Attend in person and pay
Washington takes money orders; New Jersey, cards.
Wait for the call
gob.ec says 15 to 20 days; Connecticut, 30 to 45. You are called to collect it.

Who it applies to
- Ecuadorians with an expired cédula or details to update (profession, education, disability).
- Children under 15, accompanied by a parent, grandparent or legal representative.
- Ages 15 to 17 may apply unaccompanied.
- Not for a first cédula: it is issued only in Ecuador.

Common mistakes
- Going to the consulate for a first cédula: it is only issued in Ecuador.
- Arriving without your last cédula, or without the report or declaration if it was lost.
- Trying to change civil status or name at the consulate: that goes through the Civil Registry in Ecuador.
- Submitting foreign certificates without apostille or translation.

How much is renewing an Ecuadorian cédula in the US?
The official fee on gob.ec is USD 16, but the New Jersey (2026), Washington (2024) and Connecticut consulates charge USD 21. People with a disability of 30% or more holding a CONADIS card pay nothing.
Can I get my first cédula at the consulate?
No. A first cédula is only issued at Civil Registry offices in Ecuador.
How long is it valid?
Ten years.
