Step by step
Choose the route
In person with an appointment at your consulate (first passport, minors, expired passports) or, if eligible, online at tramitesmre.cancilleria.gov.co.
Book on your consulate's system
Each consulate runs its own: Miami uses agendamientomiami.cancilleria.gov.co, with facial recognition and slots released at 10:00 for the next business day; Orlando, a Calendly calendar. Appointments are free.
Complete it in person, without photos
Photo, fingerprints and signature are taken at the office.
Pay after the formalisation
USD 86. Depending on the consulate: card, PSE (with a Colombian bank account) or money order (Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Newark, New York, Orlando and Washington).
Collect at the same office
Only the adult holder, with a fingerprint check; for a minor, the adult who came to the appointment. You have six months to collect it and one month to report errors.

Appointments
There is no single booking system for the US: each consulate publishes its own. The online request (tramitesmre.cancilleria.gov.co) only serves adults with an electronic passport issued after November 2017; you have 15 calendar days to pay and the passport is collected in person. Appointments are free: do not buy them from middlemen.

Who it applies to
- Any Colombian, adult or minor, for a first passport, expiry, damage, loss, theft, full pages or data correction.
- Adults with an electronic passport issued after 17 November 2017 and a previous biometric match: may use the online route.
- Minors aged 0 to 17: always in person, with one parent, the legal representative or a proxy.
06 · Avoid a repeat visit
Common mistakes
- Arriving with a cédula correction receipt: it is not accepted.
- Bringing photos: they are not needed.
- Presenting a Registraduría certificate for a minor instead of the certified copy of the birth registration.
- Not checking the data at pickup: after one month, you must pay for a new passport.
- Missing the six-month pickup window: the passport is voided.
- Buying the appointment from middlemen: it is free.

Scope of this guide
Colombian passports are issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; abroad, only by its consulates. A new model is being introduced from 1 April 2026 (personalised by the Imprenta Nacional), but the procedure in the US is unchanged and current passports remain valid until they expire. Colombia has no “renewal” as such: every application is a new issue that cancels the previous passport on delivery.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a Colombian passport in the US in 2026?
USD 86 for the ordinary passport, under Resolution 03969 of 2026. The executive passport is USD 175 and the emergency passport USD 129.
Do I have to switch to the new model?
No. The Foreign Ministry states that current passports remain valid until they expire and renewing them is not mandatory.
How long does delivery take in the US?
The Foreign Ministry says 8 business days after payment; the New York and Miami consulates' page says more than 20 business days. Plan for at least 8 and ask your consulate.
Do I lose the visas in my old passport?
No. Cancelling the passport does not affect the visas' validity, and the cancelled passport is returned except in some cancellation cases.
