03 · Process
Step by step
Decide whether online or at the consulate
A duplicate can be requested on the Registraduría website (PSE payment with a Colombian account) and transferred to the consulate for free. First issue, correction and renewal are in person.
Go to the consulate
With your documents and knowing your RH. Fingerprints and a photo are taken.
Pay after the formalisation
Card, PSE or money order depending on the consulate (Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Miami, Newark, New York, Orlando, San Francisco and Washington accept money orders).
Collect in person
It is not mailed (Orlando). No appointment is needed to collect it; if uncollected after a year it goes back to the Registraduría.

Each consulate runs its own calendar. Document status can be checked on the Registraduría website.

05 · Your case
Who it applies to
- First issue: Colombians aged 18 or over, by birth or adoption. Free.
- Duplicate: loss, damage or theft. It can also be requested online and transferred to the consulate for free.
- Correction: once the birth registration has already been corrected.
- Renewal: free, for holders who do not yet have the yellow cédula with holograms.

Common mistakes
- Requesting a correction before the birth registration has been corrected where it is recorded.
- Not knowing your blood type and RH.
- Applying for a passport with a correction receipt: it is not accepted.

How much is a Colombian cédula duplicate in the US?
From 1 March 2026, USD 67.55 for a duplicate or correction on the physical card, and USD 76.28 on polycarbonate with digital cédula activation (Registraduría Resolution 1500 of 2026). First issue and renewal are free.
Can it be mailed to me?
The Orlando consulate says no: it is handed over in person with a fingerprint or facial check.
